ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Cost of Living is written by Martyna Majok. Martyna Majok is a Polish playwright from an emigrated family settled in The United States. She discovered drama by writing plays for school contests. During her high school days, she wrote skits and short plays mainly for English language learning programs for immigrant parents and children. She discovered her passion for theatre and started writing plays and characters that reflect her identity. During her college days, she won and Merage Fellowship for the American Dream, award for immigrant students, which helped with her education in writing. Martyna Majok explores underrepresented communities in her writing and gives voices to immigrants or displaced people, women, the working class, and persons with disabilities. Her work touches on class, yearning, loneliness, and the journey toward connection with other human beings in America.
ABOUT THE PLAY
Cost of Living is a play about four individuals and it shows their struggles as they “navigate privilege, disability, expectations and fundamental human connections”. Eddie, an unemployed trucker relives his final days with his ex-wife, Ani, who is tragically paralyzed following a horrific car accident. In the meantime, an overworked graduate Jess takes on low paying job after job to make ends meet. Her most recent employment is as a personal caregiver for John, a graduate student with cerebral palsy.

Play Date is a monthly play reading activity, held on the third Thursday of each month. We read one play from around the world together. The play reading is followed by a group discussion about the play. Anyone is welcome to join and practice reading out loud, regardless of experience or level of English comprehension. With Play Date, learning English becomes fun. This is a place where you can practice speaking out loud, expand your vocabulary and meet new people.
