ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

The World Of Extreme Happiness is written Frances Ya-Chu-Cowhig. Ya-Chu-Cowhig, is from Philadelphia, and raised in Northern Virginia, Okinawa. A Sociology BA from Brown University, an MFA in Writing from the James A. Michener Center for Writers at UT Austin, and a certificate in Ensemble-Based Physical Theatre from the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre were all awarded to Frances Ya-Chu-Cowhig. Her work has received international attention and her plays have been performed and examined in theatres across the globe. Her plays are the holder of many awards like, The Wasserstein Prize, David Hare’s Yale Drama Series Award, an Edinburgh Fringe First Award, the David A. Callichio Award, and the Keene Prize for Literature..

The World Of Extreme Happiness revolves around the main character Sunny, born in rural China. Being a girl she is no use to her parents and they leave her to die in slop bucket. She survives, and at the age of 14 starts working in a factory. She spends her whole life, trying to fit into the work system, but when her efforts at self-improvement have disastrous effects on a coworker, she begins to doubt it.

Play Date is a monthly play reading activity, held on the third Thursday of each month.  We read one play from around the world together. The play reading is followed by a group discussion about the play. Anyone is welcome to join and practice reading out loud, regardless of experience or level of English comprehension. With Play Date, learning English becomes fun. This is a place where you can practice speaking out loud, expand your vocabulary and meet new people.
