What is an actor?

An actor or actress is a person who portrays a character in a performance. The actor performs in the theatre, film, radio, television, or digital media.

What Does An Actor Do?

An actor’s doesn’t just memorize lines and look pretty. An actor has a fun but important role in creating a story. They are responsible for interpreting and embodying the character in a play, television series, or film. To do this well many actors rehearse and train their bodies and voices regularly. They study their script and consult with the director and scene partners about their interpretation of the character.

An actor’s main concern should always be understanding what a character wants or needs and what they are is doing to achieve this action. A want or a need is often referred to as an Objective, or motivation. What an actor is doing is referred to an action or a tactic. An Actor Acts. A good actor makes many different and thoughtful choices about what the character is doing. A very good actor can make many creative out-of-the-box choices, and is always ready to change their actions on the fly.

Actors sometimes require additional special skills. For example, an actor in a Broadway musical may also need to know how to sing and dance. An actor is a puppet show must know how to operate a puppet. Professional Improvisers need to know how to create a character and make up a story on the spot without any preparation. An actor in an action blockbuster film may also be trained in stage combat and martial arts.

What does it take to be a professional artist?

How Does An Actor Prepare?

Actors Prepare in Many Different Ways. Let’s ask Vedant how he prepares.

“I like to go through the whole script a few times. I create a backstory for the character. I fill in the blanks that the script leaves out about who this character is and where they come from.”

Who is Vedant Sharma. An Interview with Vedant.

Q: How did you get into theatre?

A: I started in high school, and originally I wanted to be an actor because I wanted to be famous. I ended up really getting into the whole process of getting into character and breaking down a script and all that.

Q: Do you have a favourite role you have ever done?

A: I did a play called Mary’s Wedding. It was a two person play with no intermission. It was a  roller coaster of emotions. There are a lot of difficult transitions between different worlds because part of the play takes place in a dream world.

Q: Do you have any hobbies?

A: I like cooking, baking and writing. I bake good pie and brownie. I like sports. I play basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton.

Q: Do you have any advice to aspiring actor?

A: Just be serious about it. It’s not as easy as you think it is. There’s a lot of rejection. If you do the work you get the rewards.

Q: You are also a producer and have your own production company. What’s it like to produce your own work.

A:  It’s a lot more rewarding when you are creating a project. When you are acting you only are part of one tiny branch. But as creator you do everything. It’s more work but you get to see your own idea to come to life.

Q: You are also a writer? What inspires your writing?

A: Usually it comes from my real life. Sometimes I’ll have moments in my life or my relationships, where I’m like, “That is funny.” And it inspires an idea of a story in my head.

Q: You are a professional actor but like most working actors, you also have a job not related to acting. What is it like balancing these two worlds?

A: Yeah, it’s about knowing what to prioritize. Acting is notoriously not a stable career, and you need to find something which gives you stability.

Q: What are you up to now?

A: The job I’m doing now. I work for the NHL. I’m writing story lines about players in the league.

Q: Do you have a favourite play?

A: I really like musicals. So I’m gonna say Lion King. I love how they use puppets to create some of the characters.

Q: Do you have a favourite television show?

A: Succession is really dope. I also like Ted Lasso.
