Welcome to Arctic Tall Tales, a hilarious and poignant puppet show in Mississauga, based on the best-selling comic book series and novel by Jørn Riel.

Arctic Tall Tales Synopsis

At the dawn of the 1950s, a handful of intrepid hunters is scattered across the north-east coast of Greenland. Confinement, solitude, rationing, harsh weather… Not always easy to keep a cool head under such conditions. And yet, the vast wilderness, the majestic snow-covered expanse and the unlikely tales of our trusty comrades leave us longing for adventure and freedom. Are they truths, lies or myths? Who knows? One thing is certain : these extraordinary escapades will most certainly charm you!

 

Arctic Tall Tales are originally acollection of novels brimming with humour and humanity, as well as a series of delightfully addictive comics.  But here we present you with a larger than life version, unlike you’ve ever seen, where puppetry, storytelling, live music and sound are blended to create a universe both uproarious and poetic.

Meet The Artists

Anne Lalancette
Anne Lalancette is puppeteering for theatre (The Old Trout Puppet Workshop, Théâtre de l'Oeil, Théâtre Motus), musical industry (Socalled, Kid Koala, Daniel Bélanger), cinema (Sale Gueule, From Naughty to Nice, Riddick) and television (Robax, Les Hipaloulas, Passe-Partout). She produces her own shows with the collective La ruée vers l’or, for which she is the co-founder, general and artistic director.
Jean-François Beauvais
Originally from Quebec, Jean-François Beauvais has worked in theatre across Canada internationally. He worked in partnership with the Vichama Theater in Lima Peru. He took part in a tour of France with the troupe La Dérive, Moliéresque acting, street theater and singing. Passionate about creation and physical play, he manipulates the pen, the mask and the puppet in his spare time.
Corinne Merrell
Corinne Merrell studied architecture at McGill University and completed a masters of applied arts in stage design for theatre and film at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. She is the artistic director of the acclamed animated film The Little Prince, directed by Mark Osborne. She is also the set designer of the shows The Storyville Mosquito and Nufonia Must Fall by Kid Koala.
Simon Landry-Désy
Simon Landry-Désy graduated from Collège Lionel-Groulx in the performing arts in 2014. On stage, he was in the cast of Détruire, nous allons, Mosquito et ses mousquetaires, Plywood, un show sur le rough, and Being Philippe Gold. He also shines on the big screen in Les êtres chers, Le problème d’infiltration and several independent short films including Ferraille for which he was nominated as Best Actor in the Prends ça court award at RVCQ 2016.
Alexandre Harvey
Involved in Montreal's emerging musical scene for several years, Alexandre Harvey wishes to collaborate with artists from various disciplines, including contemporary dance and theatre. Drawing inspiration mainly from the American folk repertoire, Alexandre enjoys creating musical landscapes with eccentric instruments and sounds. He is currently the percussionist of the neo-disco-trash band Monogamy.
Francis Monty
Graduated in dramatic writing from NTS, Francis Monty is the co-founder of the Théâtre de la Pire Espèce and co-artistic director of the Théâtre Aux Écuries. He co-wrote and directed Ubu sur la table, Persée, Gestes impies et rites sacrés, Die Reise ou les visages variables de Felix Mirbt Futur intérieur. He wrote Léon le nul, Ernest T,and Petit bonhomme en papier carbone.
Nancy Longchamp
Nancy Longchamp has worked in the performing arts for 25 years. She has designed the lighting for the shows of Kobol marionnettes, Théâtre Sans Fil, Théâtre des Petites Âmes, Théâtre des Deux mains and Théâtre des Deux Mondes, including Leitmotiv for which she was nominated for best lighting design. She was the technical director at Cégep de Maisonneuve from 1996 to 2002.
Kristina Troske
Kristina is an alumnus of Université du Québec à Montréal’s contemporary puppetry programme. Creations include the co-creation with Céline Chevrier of Statue (national tour) as well as L’amour te reviendra touring to Senegal and Iqaluit in 2024. She is working with artist Nathalie Derome’s company Des mots d’la dynamite on the creation of a shadow puppetry show. Translating Arctic Tall Tales is one of her first ventures into the field of translation and has gotten her hooked!
Jérémie Desbiens
Jérémie Desbiens is a graduate of the École nationale de théâtre du Canada. His background in dance and theatre led him to discover puppets, with which he likes to create shows, particularly in object theatre. In 2016, he won the prize for "Best actor / manipulator" for his performance in Les routes ignorées, at the 23rd edition of the International Theatre Festival for Young Audiences in Subotica, Serbia.
Sophie Deslauriers
Sophie Deslauriers is a sculptor by training and a graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des arts appliqués et des métiers d’arts Olivier de Serres. Arrived in Quebec in 2013, she produced a thesis at UQAM on the adaptation and the staging of the graphic novel MAUS by Art Spiegelman. She signs the design and participates in the confection of numerous puppet productions.
Miguel Angel Gutiérrez
Miguel Angel Gutiérrez has been a director and designer for 25 years. He graduated from the Department of Art, Architecture and Design at the University of Guadalajara. He is the general and artistic director of the Luna Morena company and the Festín de los Muñecos festival, both specializing in creative and the broadcast of puppet shows and animation.
Jørn Riel
Jørn Riel was a celebrated writer born in Denmark in 1931. Left with the Lauge Koch expedition in 1950, he lived in Greenland for 16 years. From the jumble of ice and the Northern Lights, he brought back a good twenty works, including a series of short stories inspired by his travels. These short stories were later transformed into a best-selling graphic novel. The story of Arctic Tall Tales is inspired by Jorn Riel writings.

The Company That Created Arctic Tall Tales

La ruée vers l’or is an artistic collective that was born from the collaboration of two old friends. Alexandre Harvey is a composer and multi-instrumentalist. He also uses sound effects and sampling techniques to enhance his compositions. Anne Lalancette has been a puppeteer for almost 20 years. She is working in theatre, television and film productions. Together, they share a wild sense of humor and a particularly sharp sense of rhythm. They are mainly inspired by the universe of graphic novels and repertory films. The collective specializes in the production of table puppets and live music/sound shows for adult and teen audiences. Their performances are dynamic, contagious, with a great aesthetic sensibility and in collusion with the audience.
