Welcome to SUMMER ENSEMBLE...

A paid internship for actors, designers, managers, and producers.

SUMMER ENSEMBLE

FOR ARTISTS

Ensemble (n.) - A group of musicians, actors, or dancers who perform together.

Each summer Crane Creations Theatre Company hires a group of actors to share with them how to become a professional actor in Canada. Arts Jobs are rather precarious, but we aim to create a stable foundation by equipping you with the skills you need in order to work in culture.

The objective of this program is to expand your ideas and knowledge about theatre while providing you with unprecedented insight into the Canadian industry, and prepare you to become a successful professional emerging artist in the performing arts scene. This is not one of your typical acting jobs, acting classes or workshops. This is an honest, action packed skills training program.
Some of the questions we tackle are: What makes good theatre? How to become an Actor?

We also try to investigate what is currently being produced, to better understand what theatre’s role has been throughout history. Financial tools and training are also provided to participants and information on funding opportunities for artists as well.

We specifically focus on how to become an actor in Canada, and the unique challenges that come along with building a career out of our passion. We believe artists like you deserve to understand how the industry works to be able to best participate in it, and keep landing those arts jobs.

Get your vocal cords ready, we hold auditions every year, in May.

The purpose of this program is to offer an intensive immersive experience into all different areas of being an artist not to produce a show. There might be a public perforce involved or not. If you are simply looking for a gig to put on your resume this program is not a good fit.

We are thrilled to welcome everyone but we should mention that our studio is unfortunately located on the second floor, and is currently only accessible by a staircase. We are hoping to persuade our landlord to improve access in the future but for now this is the only way to the studio.

Several companies in Canada offer opportunities to create new work. You can see a list of programs for new work creation here. This opportunity is tailored to artists who would like to spend time learning about various aspects of building a career in the arts rather than create new work. Although some of our past participants have gone on to create new work, we will not be asking you to create during this program.

Participants are required to attend in person. However, due to Covid 19 coronavirus pandemic we do require participants to work from home when closures are mandated by the government.

Our studio is well accessible by public transit. We are located within walking distance (8min) from Clarkson GO Transit station in Mississauga, and there is a bus stop right across the street from our building.

Our team really values paying artists. Although it takes time and resources to make this project happen we are not burdening artists with any fees at the moment. If you would like to show appreciation for our time and this project please consider donating to our organization and keeping this program alive for other artists.

We want to see you succeed. Don’t fret too much about what monologue to choose, it is how you perform it, rather than what is the monologue choice. For more tips on how to do your best at the audition process please download this document or join our Play Date (Link).

We believe that Shakespeare’s language is extremely challenging to master. By conquering the iambic pentameter, verse, punctuation, and transcending all this with an interpretation you are exhibiting a wide range of skills that show off your technical capabilities as an actor.

You are welcome to bring lunch. There is a small fridge available to keep the food cool, We also have a microwave and a kettle available to heat up the food and boil water.

Of course! Please feel free to share this website and tell anyone looking for a paid acting job or theatre job about this opportunity. We are also happy to provide you with flyers, posters or ads documents to post in your school, community, library or local theatre. E-mail us or call us to discuss what format of materials would you like.

We encourage applicants to return and audition for us again.

A year is a long time to gain new skills! We are very happy to see the progress returning candidates make.

Please feel free to come back with the same monologue or, if you would like to show us a new one, we are happy for you to do so. The choice of a monologue is not a decisive factor, the interpretation is.

For more information of how to choose a good monologue to audition please read here but generally do choose a monologue from a play not a film or a television series.

We did have return some participants but to ensure access to as many people as possible we tend to only accept.

Many of our participants stay in touch and continue working with us. Two of the past participants are now our full time employees, and several other work with us on a regular basis in various capacities.
