THE FULL COLLECTION OF TRANSLATED PLAYS

Project Cankar Goes West aims to expand readership and appreciation for the works of the “undiscovered Eastern European Ibsen” and the “father of Slovene drama” playwright Ivan Cankar.

This project aims to translate, publish, distribute and promote a complete playwriting opus of seven plays, written by Ivan Cankar, regarded as the greatest writer in the Slovene language. The seven plays will be translated from Slovene into English language by professional expert translators who’s proficiency in Slovene is strong enough to cope with the demands of Cankar’s language. The plays will be published both in print and in the form of e-book and offered for sale on Amazon to ensure easy access and modern, efficient distribution.

This two year project is a collaboration between a Canadian theatre: Crane Creations Theatre Company, and two Slovenian institutions: Presernovo gledališče Kranj and Teden Slovenske Drame, and generously supported by European Commission and Slovene Government.

ABOUTCANKAR

Ivan Cankar, playwright, essayist, poet and political activist, is regarded as the greatest playwright in the Slovene language, and has sometimes been compared to Henrik Ibsen, Franz Kafka and James Joyce. He is considered the father of modern Slovene theatre and has had a major influence on virtually every Slovene playwright after. His playwriting opus consists of seven full length plays, all featuring a large cast, complex themes and deep understanding of socio economic and political nuances of Slovene society. To this day, the plays are still among the most popular theatre pieces in Slovene theatres. Cankar’s work is culturally specific but carries ideas that transcend place and time.

OUR PARTNERS

ABOUT THEATRE PERŠERNOVO GLEDALIŠČE

Preseren Theatre Kranj (Presernovo Gledalisce Kranj) is one of 13 professional, nationally funded repertory theatres in Slovenia.

The theatre was founded in 1945 and runs a year round season of plays performed in repertory rotation by an in house, fully employed, repertory of actors. Since 1950 the theatre has been the organizer of the National Slovene Drama Week (Teden Slovenske Drame), a curated festival presenting performances of Slovene plays. The festival also hosts a national playwriting competition, the only on of its kind in Slovenia. This anonymous competition invites playwrights to submit plays; a jury selects 5 finalists and on the last day of the festival the winner is announced.

In the past the theatre has translated and published anthologies of Slovene contemporary drama into English and German, and it frequently commissions first translations of international plays into Slovene language for the purposes of Slovene premiere of internationally renown authors.

To date, the theatre has had many great collaborations, including with the Royal Court Theatre, the world’s leading playwriting institution. The shows produced by Preseren Theatre Kranj are routinely selected for festivals around the world and win several awards.
